I always hear doctors and other experts say that if you restrict your food intake too severely, you won't lose weight because your metabolism slows down to adapt to the reduced intake. If that's true, then how do people who have gastric bypass surgery lose such massive amounts of weight so quickly? All the surgery does is drastically reduce the amount of food a person can consume -- there's no other "magic" to it. After the surgery, patients are supposed to eat healthy foods but they can't eat anything larger than their thumb, so they can't be getting much more than 800-1000 calories a day, yet doctors tell other people that if they eat that few calories their metabolism will screech to a halt and they won't lose weight. Isn't that contradictory?
